The University of North Texas at Frisco Fights Crime with Cyber Security Lab

UNTFrisco (WBAP/KLIF News) – The University of North Texas at Frisco is helping authorities fight crime with a new cyber security lab. The $350 thousand lab will help alleviate the pressure from other North Texas cyber security labs; which currently have a nine-month back log of work. The lab’s director Scott Belshaw said that cell phones and digital forensics have changed the scope of crime.

He said analyzing cell phone data is a daunting task. “We’re extracting the information and putting it into a computer system, analyzing that and then looking through 30,40,50 thousand text messages,” said Belshaw. He said the purpose of the lab is two fold: to analyze data and serve as a think tank for law enforcement who deal with cyber security.

“So, we can help law enforcement adjust because in two years who knows what’s going to be on your cell phone, what kind of locks are going to be on there and what kind of other issues we’re going to have to deal with,” said Belshaw.

Belshaw said the lab is funded by grants and gifts. He said he hopes to have the lab running within the next few weeks.
