Developers Break Ground on Office Park Made From Shipping Containers

FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF News) – Developers for the Connex Office Park in Fort Worth broke ground Thursday on an office building that will be made from shipping containers.

It’s a concept developed by Matthias and Jie Melchiors, who are the partners and founders of MEL/ARCH studio in Fort Worth.

Matthias Melchiors said the firm will  stack 40 shipping containers to create small offices for businesses that are just starting out and need a cheap office.

“When it’s all going to be finished, it’s not going to look like a shipping container on the outside. We going to be putting planting on it. It’s going to have natural vegetation growing,” he said.

Melchiors said the building is going to be a three-stories tall, zero-energy building and will incorporate solar power as well as wind turbines on the roof.

“I’ll tell you what, the units themselves when they go into ocean-going vessels, they get stacked 15 stories tall and they’re extremely well built. They’re very sturdy,” he said.

The firm said the space will help promote sustainable green approach to the working and living environment.

Spaces in the structure should be available by the end of October 2017.
