10,000 Texans Waiting for a Donation

(WBAP/KLIF) Donate Life Texas along with the Southwest Transplant Alliance (STA) held a ‘Registration Drive’ in Victory Plaza Friday morning.  April is National Donate Life month but Katie Whitton of STA says it’s necessary to keep the Organ Donation conversation going year round: “Almost 10,000 people in the state of Texas are waiting [for an organ]…and here’s the really sad part, on average, 22 people die every day – waiting on an organ donation and they don’t get one. We really need more people in Texas to register.”

Andre Tucker is one of those 10,000 Texans waiting for an organ donation, he’s been waiting for 4 years and says he’s not afraid to start the tough conversation: “A lot of times in our community, we think of all the negatives, but the one positive is, you’re helping a life, you’re saving a life, you’re giving some body a second chance at life. I think if we start the conversation with the positive instead of the negative more people will be interested and sign up to become a donor.”
