Dallas Police Raise Awareness for Upcoming Special Olympics

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – Dallas police ran seven miles from headquarters to Southern Methodist University Thursday morning as part of their annual torch run to kickoff the Special Olympics next week.

Sergeant Thomas Sible said the officers ran by four elementary schools along the way to give high-fives to kids.

“They high five us…they get our guys charged up but at the same time the schools themselves will make them aware of what we’re doing and why we’re doing it. It gets them to understand how giving back to the community is important,” he said.

Interim Chief David Pughes said it’s a trek he wanted to make himself.

“I wish I could run seven miles so I could be out there with them. Since I can’t, there out there making us all proud,” he said.

The department has been doing this for nearly 40 years, something Pughes said he is very proud of.

“It’s a great opportunity to be able to interact with the kids and to thank them for what they’ve been doing and the money that they’ve raised to help Special Olympics. It’s just great to be able to be a part of all that,” he said.

The Special Olympics will take place at the University of Texas at Arlington next weekend.
