Dallas Asks Citizens to Weigh In on Police Chief Qualities

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — The City of Dallas is asking residents to weigh in on what to look for in a new police chief.

A new online survey was released today, asking citizens to select their top five personal qualities to look for in a police chief, as well as preferred areas of experience and what you think his or her top priorities should be.

The survey is open this week and next, closing on June 2nd. Mayor Mike Rawlings says the city will have its new chief in place by July, with public safety as one of his biggest priorities moving forward.

“We’ve taken care of the pension fund. We’ve got to hire a new chief. Our interim is doing a great job, but we’ve got to hire that,” Rawlings said, alluding to a bill passed in the Texas Legislature last week to fix the depleting pension fund. “But we’ve also got to attract and retain the best. We’ve got to build our force back up.”

Interim Chief David Pughes said in October when he took over for Chief David Brown that he was not interested in the position full-time.
