Mexico Files Affidavit Opposing “Sanctuary Cities” Ban

San Antonio (WBAP/KLIF News) – Mexico’s foreign ministry has filed an affidavit urging a judge to issue a temporary injunction that would block Texas’ ban on “sanctuary cities.”

“These types of actions criminalize even more the topic of immigration, foments discriminatory acts and reduces collaboration between the immigrant community and local authorities,” the foreign ministry wrote in a statement.

A judge in San Antonio heard arguments on the request for an injunction Monday. Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Austin are among communities asking for the judge to keep the law from taking effect in September.

During the hearing, opponents argued the law would violate due process and equal protection by letting police question people based on their race. Lawyers for the state argued the measure would only require officers to cooperate with federal requests as “reasonably necessary.”

A hearing is scheduled in Austin Thursday on the law. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton had asked for a “declaratory judgment” to rule the law constitutional.
