Kroger stores will bring Bag, Scan, Go to the Metroplex

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — Kroger has announced an ambitious plan to install new self-scan checkout systems, expand its general merchandise and clothing line while closing some stores.

The Dallas Morning News reports 400 Kroger stores nationwide, including 19 in North Texas, will get new technology that will take human grocery checkers out of the shopping process. Called Scan, Bag, Go, shoppers will use their Kroger Plus cards to scan and bag their own groceries with no payment transaction necessary. The Kroger Plus cards will be linked to personal credit cards.

Kroger announced a strategy it calls “Restock Kroger” last fall, aiming to increase profits by $400 million and $4 billion in free cash flow by 2020. Part of the strategy is to reduce costs. Some underperforming stores are closing while new ones are popping up across the country.
