Congressman Burgess Weighs In on State of the Union

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WBAP/KLIF) — North Texas Congressman Michael Burgess said President Trump’s first State of the Union address was upbeat, positive, and well received.

Dr. Burgess was in the gallery Tuesday night for the speech. He said where he was sitting, many of the other lawmakers seemed to agree with the President’s talking points.

Congressman Burgess said the immigration plan that the president outlined has a good shot, because different parts of the plan appeal to different political parties. However, he said he disagrees with the path to citizenship for the so-called “Dreamers.”

“If you’re given a status where, perhaps, you can work,” said Congressman Burgess, “then please get in line behind the people who’ve been in line.”

When asked about healthcare reform, the congressman said that now that the individual mandate is repealed, both the House and the Senate can work on fixing some of the major sticking points of the issue.

He said they need to work quickly to come up with a reform plan before next year’s premiums are set by healthcare companies.
