Gov. Abbott says the key to Better Education in Texas Starts with Six Figure Salaries for Teachers

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Gov. Greg Abbott came to Dallas Tuesday to speak with local teachers and administration on how they can improve education in Texas.

At a round table discussion he talked about Texas school’s achievements and what schools can do to keep better principals and teachers

Abbott said these teachers are specially needed in schools that are struggling, he says improving teacher compensation will push the needle forward for better education.

He said teachers work long hours but their paychecks do not reflect that. He said in order to keep the best teachers he’s pushing teachers toward a six figure salary and he plans to get the funding from legislature.

“The only thing you can get funding for is something you can sell to the legislature so the first thing we need to do is put together a product that we can sell and I can get funding for it,” Abbott said.

Abbot said he’s working to show school’s improvements, he says every school sate-wide is different but is willing to go to bat for each when it comes to higher compensation.

The final decision will be up to state lawmakers to fund teacher pay raises without boosting taxes.
