Business Leaders Encouraging Texas Legislators to Make School Finance Reform a Top Priority

PLANO (WBAP/KLIF) – The North Texas business community is encouraging lawmakers to improve the Texas public school finance system ahead of the upcoming state legislative session.

At a rally Tuesday in Plano many business leaders said the current system for funding Texas public schools is at a breaking point. The regional business community and elected leadership from all levels of governments are eager to show support to state officials to encourage them to address the issue in the upcoming 86th Legislature.

“The business community is paying attention,” said North Texas Commission, CEO, Chris Wallace. “Our cities, our counties, our community college districts are going to be working together to make sure that we tackle this top priority for the next session.”

Wallace said that by the year 2036 it’s estimated that 65 percent of jobs will require a certificate or a two or four year degree. State Representative Jeff Leach assured business leaders at Tuesday’s rally that education will be a top priority in the upcoming session.

“In 2019 we are going to focus on books, not bathrooms,” said Leach.
