The Debate Over Teenage Curfew Continues at Dallas City Hall

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The debate over a teenage curfew in Dallas continues.

The curfew expired in January and the Dallas City Council must vote on whether or not to reinstate it. This week that vote was delayed. Dallas Police Association President Mike Mata said he’s frustrated at a lack of urgency from the council.

“The curfew debate at City Hall has brought out the worst in some of our City Councilmembers and community leaders,” said Mata. “What should be a discussion on how we can best keep our children safe from violent crime – and away from dangerous criminal influences – has become nothing more than another opportunity to promote division between Dallas police officers and the community we serve.”

The Dallas Police Chief said Wednesday that crime hasn’t gone up since the curfew expired. But believes the issue is about protecting teenagers from violence.

“Instead of focusing on the safety of children, too many Councilmembers appear more interested in grandstanding for political gain than developing a smart and transparent curfew,” said Mata. “Why is it so hard to say “enough of the police bashing” and instead work to unite our community behind the common goal of public safety?”

The council is expected to consider a vote on the curfew in March.
