FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF) – The Fort Worth Police Department is investigating one of its own following a deadly shooting over the weekend.

According to Police, Officers responded the home of Atatiana Jefferson’s relative after a neighbor called for a welfare check because a door was open at the house.

Lt Brandon O’Neil said Sunday evening that while searching outside the home a responding Officer saw movement inside the house and shot through a window, killing Jefferson.

“An 8-year-old male, Ms. Jefferson nephew was inside the room at this time,” said Lt. O’Neil.

Jefferson was black and the officer was white. The local Black Empowerment Movement, and other groups, are now asking questions.

“How did it go from a wellness check call to a perceived burglary threat?” asked an activist Sunday.

According to Police, the Officer did not announce he was a police officer before he fired his gun.

“What the Officer observed and why he did not announce Police will be addressed as the investigation continues,” said Lt. O’Neil.

The shooting is under investigation. Fort Worth Police are expected to release more information Monday.
