FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF News) – As the family of the Dallas woman who was shot and killed by a Fort Worth police officer during what was supposed to be a welfare check grieves, community members are rallying around them.

28-year-old Atatiana Jefferson had been babysitting her 8-year-old nephew when she killed.

Former Fort Worth police officer Aaron Dean shot Jefferson as she looked out her window when he and another officer were walking the perimeter of the house.

Fort Worth police said Dean fired the shot when he saw movement and did not announce he was an officer.

The department’s Chief Ed Kraus said Dean was arrested at his attorney’s office. He was jailed on a $200,000 bond on a murder charge and bonded out Monday night.

A GoFundMe page set up by the Jefferson family attorney days after her death has raised more than $217,000 of its $250,000 goal.

On the page, Merritt writes that Jefferson was a pre-med graduate from Xavier University who had taken a break from school to help with her ailing mother.

He also writes the money collected will go directly to funeral costs and other expenses associated with Jefferson’s death.
