Fort Worth (WBAP) - A soldier from Fort Worth delighted his parents when he called from Afghanistan to say that he was going to appear on the front page of the New York Times. Zachary Boyd, 19, was photographed fending off an ambush by Taliban militants.

"I ran to the computer and looked at the New York Times right quick," says Boyd's father, Tommy. "Lo and behold, I saw his pink underwear and just laughed for about the next five minutes."

The younger Boyd says the militants attacked while he was sleeping. He says he only had time to grab his body armor, helmet and gun.

"I knew he was a boxer guy, I knew that for sure," Tommy Boyd adds. "I did not know they were pink, and I didn't know they said, 'I love New York.'"

Zachary Boyd graduated from Keller Central High School in 2007. His parents say he became motivated to join the Army following the September 11th attacks. Boyd was promoted to specialist last week and says he hopes to someday lead men in combat.
