GARLAND (WBAP) - A U.S. postal truck that was stolen out of Garland on Thursday has been recovered.

The clearly-marked white, Dodge Caravan minivan was taken around noon while the mail carrier driving it was walking his route.  The vehicle was last seen in the 5500 blk. of Sundown Ln.  Around 8 p.m., someone noticed the van parked near a building at the Montclair Estates retirement community in the 800 blk. of La Prada Dr.

Officials from the U.S. postal office won't clarify whether the mail carrier left the keys in the van before he left on his route, but officials do say that action would go against protocol.

Now, postal officials are trying to figure out how much mail may have been stolen.

Depending on how much mail was taken, the suspect or suspects could face quite a few possession of stolen mail charges.

"Every piece of mail is considered a different charge in federal court," said U.S. Postal Inspector Daniel Adame.  "If someone steals 200 pieces of mail, it could be 200 individual charges."

The truck originated from the South Station Post Office on Oates Rd.

If you live in or around south Garland and think you may be missing some mail, you're asked to call 877-876-2455.
