I had the good fortune to meet and talk at length with a U.S. Senator for the first time while still in high school. He was everything I imagined that such a person would be: smart, humble, gracious, generous and a true gentleman.
He'd been gravely wounded in World War II, but he did not boast of his Purple Heart or the many other military decorations he earned.
He'd been picked on because of his race. He made no personal issue of it, but advocated for others.
He was an inspiration to me and thousands more.
Rest in peace, Dan Inouye. This country was a better place with you in it.
