(WBAP 24/7 News) - The top executive at American Airlines and parent AMR Corp. has advised employees that they'll learn soon if the carrier intends to pursue a merger.
Chairman and chief executive Tom Horton said in a letter to employees Thursday, "while I cannot give you a precise date, I can tell you that we expect o bring this to a conclusion within a matter of weeks."
American executives have been meeting with their counterparts from US Airways Group Inc. - as well as the unsecured creditors committee in American's bankruptcy case - as they've explored the idea of combining the nation's third and fifth largest airlines by traffic.
Current indications are that the decision will come in the latter part of January. The AMR board of directors has a regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 9.
