DALLAS (WBAP 24/7 News) - The Dallas Convention Center is now the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, after the City Council voted 11-0 Wednesday to rename the facility in honor of the retired U.S. Senator.
Surrounded by friends and familiar faces at City Hall, Hutchison beamed as council member after council member sang her praises for her efforts in behalf of the city, from pushing to appeal the Wright Amendment to bringing federal tax dollars to Texas for a host of projects, including the Trinity River Project.
No council member spoke against the renaming, although one former council member, Sandra Crenshaw, and one council candidate, Kermit Mitchell, did express concerns that the action could divide people.
City Manager Mary Suhm said the city will work quickly to change the main signs around the convention center.
