DALLAS (WBAP 24/7 News) - A pair of men in their late 20s face capital murder charges in connection with the death of a 79-year-old woman earlier this month.
Avanell Cowgill (pictured) was found dead in her home near White Rock Lake March 9. Police say two days earlier, she was killed and robbed.
"It was a brutal murder. It was clearly irresponsible and a dastardly deed. We don't know why. They took the life of a grandmother," said Major Jeff Cotner with Dallas police.
Late Friday night, police announced capital murder charges against 27-year-old Daniel Brooks and 29-year-old David Herron. Both men had been in the Richardson city jail since Wednesday on an unrelated theft charge.
Cotner says shortly after Cowgill's death, the men were spotted on surveillance camera at several Metroplex stores.
"The suspects used her credit card to make a purchase of an electronic device at Walmart," said Cotner.
He says they then sold that electronic device to another store. It was there, police were able to trace the device back to the suspects.
Brooks and Herron were transferred to Lew Sterrett Justice Center Friday night, where they remain on a million dollars bail each.
