Richardson Police Officer Killed; Suspect Charged with Capital Murder

The Richardson police officer who was killed Wednesday night has been identified as 37-year-old David Sherrard of Wylie.

Richardson Police Chief Jimmy Spivey said Sherrard was a 14-year veteran of the force.

“I can tell you that Officer Sherrard is a brave, tenured police officer who died in the service of his community,” he said.

Richardson Police have identified the alleged gunman in connection the shooting death of a Richardson Police officer last night.

26-year old Brandon McCall has been charged with capital murder of a peace officer who was killed while responding to a disturbance call at an apartment complex.

Update: 8:24am

The Dallas Police Association President Mike Mata has extended the deepest condolences and prayers to the Richardson Police Department in reaction to the death of an officer killed in the line of duty last night.

The 27-year old officer and a civililan were killed in connection with a disturbance call around 7pm. The shooter was taken into custody after a stand-off with police.

Meantime, our Scott Sidway talked with residents in the area who are surprised by what happened.

Jesse Jones lives the the Breckenridge Point Apartments and says he was shocked when he found out what happened,

“Everybody is friendly […] They’re real friendly over here so I would never think anything like this would happen,” said Jones.

Residents were told to stay inside their homes during the hours-long standoff — those who weren’t home yet weren’t allowed in until the situation resolved. The Plano Police Department still has the apartment building taped off — they’ve taken over the investigation to allow Richardson officers to grieve.

Update at 4:21am:

Richardson, TX (WBAP/KLIF) – In addition to the Richardson Police officer killed in the line of duty last night, a second person has died in connection with a disturbance call at the Breckenridge Apartments on E. Renner Rd.

There is still no word on what led to the disturbance around seven last night.

The slain 27-year old officer has not been identified, but reportedly leaves behind a wife and two daughters.

The shooting suspect was arrested after a stand-off with police.

Update at 12:00am:

Shortly before midnight Wednesday, Richardson police arrested the suspect accused of killing a Richardson police officer. The unidentified suspect was rushed to an ambulance waiting nearby. According to police reports, gas grenades were used to force the suspect out of the apartment in which he was barricaded

Update at 11:00pm:

Richardson Police have confirmed that the officer who was shot Wednesday evening at the Breckinridge Point Apartments has died. Suspect remains barricaded at apartment complex near E. Renner and North Star Roads.

RICHARDSON (WBAP/KLIF) – A police officer has been shot in Richardson while on a call. The Richardson Police Department at this time will only say that two people have been hit and one is believed to be an officer.

At this time, police are reporting a suspect has been barricaded inside an apartment building, and that they have fired multiple rounds at officers when attempting negotiations.

Our reporting partners at WFAA-TV say that the unidentified officer was taken to Medical City Plano hospital, but their condition is unknown.

There is no word at this time to what led up to the shooting.
