EVERMAN  (WBAP/KLIF News) – The coronavirus pandemic has dealt a devastating double blow to a North Texas family.

The elderly mother of an Everman police officer has died of COVID-19 just three days after her son.

Officer Alex Arango and his 81-year-old mother Carmen Arango were battling the virus in the ICU last week.

Alex died Thursday and his mother passed away Sunday.

The two had been living together and the Everman Police Department said Officer Arango contracted the virus while on duty.

Danet Arango-Henry told our media partner WFAA TV she can’t believe her mother and brother are gone.

“It is just unbearable to deal with,” she said.

Fighting back tears, Arango-Henry said the family is trying to find a sense of hope within this tragedy.

“If my brother is going to be a stepping stone to help find that cure faster. We’re all for it. We want to fill the void of our loss but it will be an honor to save other people,” she said.

A memorial service is being planned.

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up for the family to help pay for funeral expenses.
