Honoring MLK Jr across the Metroplex

(WBAP/KLIF) – Events surrounding MLK Jr. day are limited across North Texas due to the continued spread of the COVID-19 Omicron variant.

The City of Dallas kicked off its 40th annual celebration of the life an legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. last week with events highlighting issues of equity, diversity, and opportunity. The week includes a Day of Prayer, a Day of Service, a Wreath Laying Ceremony, Job Fair, Equity Symposium, Youth Summit, and Scholarship & Awards Gala. Celebration week culminates with the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Virtual Parade on Tuesday morning.

“This 2022 Virtual Parade will be pre-recorded and broadcast on the public access channel. It is a compilation of videos and pictures depicting MLK Day parades of the past,” organizers said in a statement. “There will be interviews discussing the 2022 theme: “40 Years Strong: A Look Toward the Future.”

On Monday, Fort Worth ISD employees assembled care packages consisting of hats, gloves, blankets, toiletries, and non-perishable foods at the FWISD Administration Building located at 100 N. University Drive. All District staff are invited to join FWISD Central Office Leadership, FWISD Board of Trustees and Fort Worth Community Leaders for a day of service and community outreach.

Reunion Tower will be honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a light show that began Monday morning and will be shown again Monday night from 5pm-11:59pm. The words “MLK.DREAM.UNITY.HOPE” are being added to this year’s show honoring the holiday.

A number of other events were planned to honor the life and legacy of MLK Jr. on Monday.
