NORTH RICHLAND HILLS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – North Richland Hills police are crediting the quick actions of a parent who thwarted a kidnapping during “Meet The Teacher” night at the International Leadership of Texas school last week.

On Tuesday, August 9th, investigators said a parent noticed 31-year-old Kevin Ward put his arm around a child and attempt to lure him away from his mother.

Another parent noticed, grabbed the child back and alerted school officials.

North Richland Hills Police Department’s Carissa Katekaru said this is an example of why it’s important to be observant.

“If you see something say something and in this case the mother did that. The mother was able to do stop this before it escalated any further,” she said.

Katekaru urges parents to teach their children to be observant as well, especially as the school year ramps up.

“It’s very important to start reinforcing that at an early age…and teach them if they see something out of place or that seems awkward or suspicious that they should alert a trusted adult immediately,” she said.

Ward is being held in the Tarrant County Jail on a charge of unlawful restraint less than seventeen years of age.

His bond has been set at $150,000.
