(WBAP/KLIF) — 50 years ago the last troops left Vietnam, ending one of America’s most controversial and bloodiest wars.

Many would return without the ‘welcome home’ they deserved after giving the ultimate sacrifice. This week, several North Texas communities are honoring veterans of the war with memorials and displays.

One such as display is in Wise County where a replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. sits at the county fairgrounds in Decatur. Former Marine Harold Stokes remembers the war all too well, as his 7th Combat Engineering Battalion lost 128 soldiers in the war. The wall is on display through April 2nd.

The 8-foot tall, 360 foot long wall contains all of the over 58,000 names of Vietnam war dead, including 10 Wise County residents and Stoke’s 128 comrades from his engineering unit..
