Dallas (WBAP/KLIF News) – Non-profit groups in North Texas say they have raised almost $10 million dollars for the families of five police officers who were killed in Downtown Dallas July 7.
The Assist the Officer Foundation has raised more than $5 million. The foundation has chapters across the country to help officers and families who are injured or killed in the line of duty.
Billy Bob’s Texas held a concert to raise money for families a few weeks after the shooting. The concert raised $250,000.
“It was just the least we could do,” says Billy Bob’s Chris Spinks. “We also have a lot of employees here who donated their time and effort and were reaching out to collect items for a silent auction. It just seems like everybody pulled together.”
Spinks says an agent in Nashville contacted Billy Bob’s after the shooting, saying artists were looking for a way to raise money.
“With as much negative in the world, it was very comforting and reassuring to know that there are still people who come together and not even ask questions,” Spinks says. “They just say, ‘Whatever it is that I can do to help.'”
The Dallas Morning News reports a fundraiser set up by the Dallas Mavericks to let two people watch a game with Mark Cuban raised $50,000. The Dallas Cowboys raised $17,000 by offering dinner with Tony Romo and Jason Garrett.
