Denton (WBAP/KLIF News) – Students at the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University held joint rallies to call for the schools to become “sanctuary campuses.” They want the schools to refuse to work with federal agents who are looking to start deportation proceedings for a student or staff member.

“My family used to be undocumented. They’re not anymore, thankfully, but the real issue is just hot-button tension,” says UNT student David Lopez.

Lopez says the election of Donald Trump has made many immigrants feel their future is in jeopardy.

“This is a student-led movement, and we’re actually hoping to change policy,” he says.

Organizers say more than 1,200 people have signed a petition for UNT to adopt the changes.

The University of North Texas says it does not plan to change its policy, but it supports students for organizing a rally.

“This reinforces the diverse ways of thought we have here,” says UNT’s Margarita Venegas. “We’re very proud of our students.”

Venegas says UNT already offers students counseling and legal help if a student is dealing with immigration issues.

On Thursday, Governor Greg Abbott tweeted, “Texas will not tolerate sanctuary campuses or cities. I will cut funding for any state campus if it establishes sanctuary status.”

Students at Texas State University have also put out a petition for the school to stop working with the federal government on immigration issues.
