DALLAS – Hundreds of people gathered in downtown Dallas Monday night to protest President Donald Trump’s travel ban.
The executive order bars people from seven Muslim countries from entering the United States for the 120 days.
Numerous people were detained at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport over the weekend, sparking large protests in the international terminal. The demonstrations were part a series of protests nationwide.
Monday night’s protest was held at Thanksgiving Square and was attended by Dallas County officials, refugee resettlement agencies, civic and religious leaders. Reverend T.D Jakes of The Potter’s House prayed over the ceremony.
He told the crowd that the country and its citizens are being tested. Jakes said the country should show compassion for those who are different both ethnically and politically.
“We pray for our president. We pray for our elected officials. We can not repeat the mistakes of yesterday, for righteousness exults a nation but sin is a reproach to any people,” he said.
Jakes urged the crowd to encourage others to look past their differences and focus on what they have in common…being human.
“We have different skins. We have different styles . We have different philosophical ideologies but by one blood have You made all men,” said Jakes.
