Abbott Responds to Dallas County “Welcoming Community” Resolution

(WBAP/KLIF) – Governor Greg Abbott says Dallas County Commissioners are “gambling with the safety of their citizens” by passing a resolution that welcomes undocumented immigrants into the county.

“Texas is going to bring the hammer down on Dallas County,” Governor Abbott said. The Texas Senate recently passed Senate Bill 4, which creates a number of penalties, including jail time, for public officials that do not comply with federal immigration law. “We will make it financially impossible for Dallas County to have sanctuary city policies. This will come to an end soon, and Dallas County is a reason why.”

During his State of the State address, the Governor cited two Dallas County murders among his reasons for pushing for a sanctuary city ban. A man previously deported three times is the suspect in the deaths of 33-year-old Ruben Moreno and 44-year-old Welton Betts last September.

Governor Abbott says, for now, Dallas County officials are safe. The “Welcoming Community” resolution is not a law. “If anybody acts on that resolution…if any sanctuary city policy is implemented in any way, the hammer will come down on them.”

Gov. Abbott spoke with Grant Stinchfield on The Stinchfield Report.
