FBI, FCC Join Investigation of Dallas Tornado Sirens

Dallas (WBAP/KLIF News) – The FBI and FCC will join Dallas police in investigating this weekend’s hack that set off all 156 tornado sirens in Dallas. The sirens went off at least a dozen times before the system was shut down around 1:20 Saturday morning.

Investigators say the system was likely hacked from somewhere in Dallas.

“I’ve started the process of looking at all critical systems city-wide to determine what vulnerabilities may exist,” City Manager TC Broadnax told the Dallas City Council’s committee for public safety Monday morning.

Broadnax says the city’s search for potential vulnerabilities includes police and fire dispatch, the 911 center and water system.

“Once this is confirmed, the next steps include finding the source of the compromise,” he says. “As the mayor has indicated, we will hopefully find this individual and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.”

Mayor Mike Rawlings has put out a statement saying, “This is yet another serious example of the need for us to upgrade and better safeguard our city’s technology infrastructure.”

Broadnax says he plans to present a report to the full city council on Wednesday. He hopes to present the council with recommendations on how to improve security.
