University of North Texas, SMU to Receive Scholarship Funding for Students Seeking Teaching Careers

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – The University of North Texas and Southern Methodist University have been awarded scholarship funding for students who want to pursue a career in education.

The universities are two out of ten recipients of the Raising Teachers Program. It’s a program that was launched by the Raise Your Hand Texas Foundation.

UNT Dallas President Bob Mong said the investment opens up scholarship opportunities.

“For four years, we’ll get twenty $8,000 scholarships to identify promising students. In particular, we’ll be looking for bilingual students who will be bilingual teachers,” he said.

Mong said the scholarship money will be a big help in furthering the program’s mission.

“One reason we were chosen was because we created the Emerging Teacher Institute which focuses on aggressively recruiting kids who want to be teachers,” he said.

The investment is part of the H.E.B. CEO Charle’s Butt’s commitment to the Raise Your Hand Texas Foundation.
