Political Action Committee Running Paid Ads Over SMU 9/11 Memorial Dispute

DALLAS  (WBAP/KLIF News) – Southern Methodist University student leaders and university officials failed to reach an agreement over the location of a 9/11 memorial and now a political action committee has gotten involved.

The students met with school administrators regarding the university’s decision to move the memorial from Dallas Hall, the campus’ most prominent lawn.

They said the meeting was productive but SMU officials didn’t budge.

The political action committee “Courageous Conservatives” is now running paid advertisements asking people to contact SMU President Gerald Turner.

“SMU President Gerald Turner’s administration has ordered the flag of the Dallas Hall lawn. They called displaying the American flag ‘triggering, harmful and even harrassing’. This has got to stop. Tell him our flag isn’t triggering harmful or harassing. Tell Turner and his leftists professors we will never forget 9/11,” it said.

The SMU Republicans said they are not affiliated with the ad.

The university backed off the language of “triggering and harassing” but still say the memorial should be moved to respect the rights of all students as well as for logistical reasons.

Each year, the student group Young Americans for Freedom, along with other on-campus organizations, stick miniature American flags into the lawn in front of Dallas Hall…one for each life lost that day.

Dallas Hall was chosen as the memorial site because of it’s central location and it’s where the SMU community gathered on September 11, 2001.
