McKinney ISD Hit With Complaint Over Prayer at Employee Assembly

MCKINNEY (WBAP/KLIF News) – A complaint has been filed against the  McKinney Independent School District over a prayer that took place at a staff meeting last month.

The meeting was held at the Prestonwood Baptist Church; a tradition that has lasted a decade.

The Wisconsin-based Freedom from Religion Foundation said Superintendent Rick McDaniel stepped over the line when he lead the assembled employees in prayer.

“So for those of you who feel comfortable praying with me that’s fine. At a minimum, we’re going to have a moment of silence for those folks in Barcelona and others that have lost their lives recently to terrorists across the world. We can make a difference and it starts right here. Heavenly Father we thank you for this beautiful day,” said McDaniel during the prayer.

According to the Dallas Morning News, three people, including one district employee, filed a complaint with the foundation.

The Freedom from Religion Foundation claims that by having the prayer, the school district “violates its obligation to remain neutral on matters of religion.”

The school board trustees met Tuesday to discuss the nonprofit’s concerns.
