Suspect in Fatal Shooting at Uptown Apartment Complex Killed, Victim Identified

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – The suspect in a fatal shooting at the North End apartment complex in Uptown was killed in an officer-involved shooting Tuesday afternoon.

Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall identified the man as 29-year-old Marlon Smith.

A few hours into a manhunt, DPD police officers and the U.S. Marshals task force officers caught up with Smith around 1 p.m. on Hulse Boulevard near Hutchins Road.

Hall said Smith got out of the car and allegedly started shooting at officers. He was killed in the gunfire exchange with police.

No officers were injured.

Hall said there was another person in the car with Smith who was not injured in the gunfire.

Officers were initially called to the luxury apartment building on North Field near Ashland Street around 10:16 a.m.

Investigators said the former security guard walked into the complex, shot and killed 52-year-old Nancy Churchwell, the apartment manager, and took off on foot after the shooting.

Curtis King is a longtime resident of the complex and said security guards come and go.

“From being here 10 years, you see people come in and out as a security guards. You don’t know if these people are part-time workers or full-time workers. You just know that it’s a rotation of security guards,” he said.

King said he was devastated to learn that Churchwell had died. A woman he said went the extra mile for the North End community.

“I mean peaceful, candles are burning. They got candy on the desk, bubble gum. Sometimes you would get cookies,” he said.

Hall said it’s disheartening that a person that was hired to protect a community allegedly committed such an act.

“Obviously, it doesn’t sit well and it disturbs us as a community as a whole when we hire individuals to protect us and they turn around and become the individuals that put us in harms way or harm us,” said Hall.

She said the department will continue to work with apartment complexes as they hire security guards to make sure their communities are safe.
