Texas Rangers May Have Extra Medics On Hand for Hot, Sunday Afternoon Game

ARLINGTON (WBAP/KLIF News) — The Texas Rangers play a day-game on Sunday with record high temperatures expected, but don’t expect a cancellation or postponed first pitch.

As of Friday, there are no plans to change the start time of the Rangers’ game against the Cleveland Indians, which begins Sunday at 2:05, even though the high temperature could be close to 108 degrees.

“In 2011, we had more than 10 games with temperatures above 104 degrees ,” said Vice President of Operations and Events Sean Decker. “Unfortunately, we’ve had to deal with this quite a bit.”

As a precaution, Decker said the club plans to have extra medics at the stadium Sunday just in case, depending on attendance. He added that they encourage fans who come out to the game to stay hydrated and wear light clothing.

In terms of attendance, Decker said the schedule may drive some people away on Sunday.

“I think a lot of folks who could come to the night game the night before or in this case, the night after, may choose to do one of those instead of the day game,” Decker said. “But in 2011 when we had all those hot games, we averaged 40,000 people per game.”

There has only been one game in Major League Baseball history that was cancelled because of heat, and that was back in 1936.
