Dallas Hospital Gives Bicycle Helmets to Kids to Promote Safety

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — 500 kids received free bicycle helmets this weekend thanks to the Medical City Children’s Hospital.

The giveaways were part of the “Hard hats for Little Heads” program, and the goal is to keep parents and kids aware of just how important wearing a helmet can be.

“A properly fitting bike helmet can reduce brain injury by up to 85 percent,” said Karrie Lawson, who is with the hospital, “which is our major concern for fatality and long-term disability.”

Lawson said fewer than half of cyclists wear helmets, despite how much wearing one can help.

She also said Dallas County is in the Texas top ten when it comes to bicycle crashes and fatalities.
