City of Mesquite to Raise Community Funds for Veteran’s Memorial

MESQUITE (WBAP/KLIF)- The City of Mesquite needs the community’s help to raise funds to complete designs for a Veterans Memorial to be built near City Lake Park.

Wayne Larson with the City of Mesquite says it’s a community-based project and will include a 77-foot wide plaza with an area designated to pay tribute to those military veterans from Mesquite.

The plaza will feature two walls to recognize branches of the military, a nearly 6-foot wide eagle and a 12-foot diameter granite star. The memorial will include an audience area for special ceremonies. There will be opportunities later this year for the public to purchase donor bricks that will be placed on the walkway border leading up to the memorial plaza. “We’ve raised around $200,000 so far we probably need to raise about $100,000 more to get us to a point where we are comfortable but their are features that can be taken out or added,” Larson said.

City Manager Cliff Keheley said, “The community should applaud itself for helping to get the project this far.”

Atmos Energy announced their title sponsorship of the project in November 2018 with a $100,000 financial commitment to the memorial campaign.
