Retrial of Former Mesquite Officer Accused in Shooting of Unarmed Motorist Begins Today

Dallas (WBAP/KLIF) – After a mistrial earlier this year, a Dallas County jury will try to decide if a former Mesquite police officer was justified in the shooting of an unarmed man.

Derick Wiley is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, accused of severely wounding Lyndo Jones (pictured right) during a suspected car robbery call nearly two years ago. As it turned out, the vehicle belonged to Jones.

Civil attorneys pushed for the Dallas County District Attorney’s officer to retry the case.

“We want a jury that can see things in a very unbiased and even way, and we think we have that this time around,” a member of the DA’s office told WFAA-TV.

An emotional Wiley, who was fired from the Mesquite Police Department testified at the first trial that he thought Jones had a weapon.

Opening statements begin this morning.
