Texas House Speaker says Trump is Hurting Republican Party in Released Audio Recording

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – In a WBAP exclusive, the controversial audio recording of Texas House Speaker Dennis Bonnen was released Tuesday.

Conservative activist Michael Quinn Sullivan unveiled the recording on which he claims Bonnen asked him to target 10 GOP lawmakers in the 2020 primaries in exchange for media credentials.

In the recording, Bonnen is heard telling Sullivan President Trump is hurting the Republican party.

“All due respect to Trump, who I love by the way,” said Bonnen. “He’s killing us in urban suburban districts.”

Bonnen is heard saying the focus should be on 2020 to ensure the right Republicans are in place to beat the Democrats. He tells Sullivan to tone down “the pops” on decent members of the House and “unload” on those who need to be gotten rid of.

Bonnen responded to the release of the audio Tuesday.

“I have repeatedly called for the recording to be released because it will be immediately clear that no laws were broken,” said Bonnen. “This was nothing more than a political discussion – the problem is that I had it with that guy. My colleagues have always deserved the facts and context this recording provides, and with clear evidence now disproving allegations of criminal wrongdoing, the House can finally move on.”

According to Sullivan, he recorded the conversation to “protect himself” from Bonnen.
