Dallas County Issues Mosquito Warning

Story by WBAP/KLIF's Eric Bushman

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF 24/7 NEWS) – Dallas County Health leaders are asking residents to avoid contact with mosquitoes all day and night given a slight, but important, difference between how humans can contract West Nile Virus and Chickungunya or 'Chick V'.

"The 'Chick-V' virus is spread by daytime mosquitoes where West Nile Virus is spread by nighttime mosquitoes," said Dallas County Medical Director Dr. Christopher Perkins.

While North Texas cases of Chickungunya have come from residents who were infected during international travel, Perkins says it is only a matter of time before there is a case where someone is infected locally.

"You need to protect yourself by wearing appropriate long-sleeve shirts and pants, use insect repellant and look for standing water," Dr. Perkins said.
