STEPHENVILLE (WBAP/KLIF 24/7 News) – The trial of the man accused of killing famed American Sniper Chris Kyle and Kyle's friend Chad Littlefield is underway in Erath county. In opening statements prosectors said that both Kyle and Littlefield were shot in the back multiple times and in the head at a gun range at Rough Creek Lodge outside Glen Rose. The two had taken the accused killer Eddie Ray Routh there to try to talk with him and help with his post-military PTSD issues.
Routh's defense attorney told the jury in opening statements that Routh was in deep psychosis at the time of the murders. Lawyers are presenting an insanity defense in the case.
The trial opened under tight security in the town of about 18,000 amid massive publicity following the opening recently of the blockbuster movie American Sniper, the tale of Kyle's heroics on the battlefield in Iraq.
