Ft. Worth (WBAP/KLIF News) – Fort Worth is holding a public meeting Thursday evening on a proposal for zoning changes along Berry Street near TCU.

While the TEX-Rail line south of downtown still lacks funding, planning has begun for a station at Berry Street and Cleburne Road.

The city’s plan would attempt to make the stretch of Berry between TCU and Cleburne Road friendlier for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The plan would encourage mixed use development along Berry, including buildings that run up to sidewalks instead of businesses with landscaping or parking lots in front. The plan would also call for higher density residential along Berry Street.

The city’s recommendations acknowledge that the area is “well-connected” right now, but a lack of sidewalks and trees lining the street can make walking difficult, especially during the summer.

The plan also recommends changes in other parts of the Berry Street corridor. East of Cleburne Road, the recommendations cite a “potential to find a niche” as a place where entrepreneurs and creative people can start businesses.

South of Berry, a center median and street trees have been proposed to make walking to Bluebonnet Circle easier.

To the west, the plan says the creation of a bicycle and pedestrian route to the Trinity Trail should be a priority.

Thursday’s meeting will take place at University United Methodist Church at 2416 W. Berry St. at 6 pm.
