Police: Man Ambushed Officer in Park

EULESS (WBAP/KLIF News) – Police in Euless have released more information about what led up to the deadly shooting of an officer.

Jorge Gonzalez, 22, is accused of gunning down Officer David Hofer, 29, when he responded to a call about suspicious activity at J.A. Carr Park on Tuesday.  Gonzalez was killed when officers returned fire.  “[Gonzalez] had been in custody for public intoxication and had been arrested a day before,” said Police Chief Michael Brown.  “We later determined, after this tragedy, that there had been a home burglarized in the 600 block of Bayless Drive.  The suspect left the home with stolen weapons and walked across the street to [the park].”

Gonzalez was known to law enforcement.  According to Brown, he had been arrested at least eight times prior to the shooting.  “Unknown to our responding officers, the suspect had taken a position of cover in a drainage ditch.  The spot was somewhat below ground and isolated.  It is our belief, based upon the facts known to us, that the suspect took this position to ambush the responding officers.”

Hofer had been with the Euless Police Department for two years after serving on the New York City police force.  He was engaged to be married.  Hofer is only the second officer to die in the line of duty in Euless.
