DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – A nine year veteran of the Austin Police Department is hospitalized after a shootout with a burglary suspect in downtown Austin.
The suspect, described as a white male in his 30’s, was reportedly seen breaking into cars, when he was approached by a security guard. The security guard pursued the suspect and called 9-1-1. The officer was on patrol in the area, when he observed the chase. The officer, along with the assistance of a security guard, attempted to subdue the suspect. The officer gave several commands, but the suspect would not comply. Chief Art Acevedo says without warning the suspect pulled out a semi automatic pistol and shot the officer.
The officer was shot in the lower right abdomen below the vest. The officer returned fire, shooting and killing the suspect.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay, which is standard protocol. No names have been released.
