Dallas (WBAP/KLIF News) – Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is donating $1 million to the Dallas Police Department, to help cover the overtime costs of officers patrolling in Oaklawn.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said following the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando Saturday, Cuban called him and asked how he could help.

“He wants to do that not just to help, but to say to other people, come with me to help,” said Rawlings.  “So I call on other individuals, other philanthropists that want to help in this effort.”

The money will go to help cover overtime and other costs related to the increased police presence in Oaklawn, where there have been a rash of assaults in recent weeks.

The DPD has stepped up patrols in Oaklawn after a string of assaults, some of which have been against members of the LGBT community.

Rawlings says in addition to increased foot patrols, he’d like to see more security cameras installed.
