Big Tex’s New Duds Honor Dallas Police

Big Tex 2016-4DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – The State Fair of Texas showed off some new clothes for its iconic cowboy on Friday morning.

Big Tex’s custom-made outfit from Fort Worth-based Dickies typically has to be replaced every three years.

His shirt is more than 10 times the size of an average man’s.  It takes about two weeks to make the shirt.  His jeans take about 100 yards of fabric and one week to make.

The new duds for the 55-foot-tall cowboy feature a ribbon with DPD’s badge in honor of the five police officers killed in an attack downtown on July 7, 2016.  “That day was very rough for everyone to experience,” said Karissa Condoianis, a spokeswoman for the State Fair.  “We have been trying to figure out since that occurred how we could honor those officers.  This is just one way we plan to do that.”

Big Tex will be installed on Sept. 23.  The fair runs from Sept. 30 – Oct. 23.
