Austin (WBAP/KLIF News) – Governor Greg Abbott says he will follow through with a threat to leave the Refugee Resettlement Program. The governor announced his intention last week.
The governor had called for greater screening of refugees who would settle in Texas to ensure they pose no threat. He also said called for a guarantee that the number of refugees sent to Texas would not exceed the original allocation for 2016.
Governor Abbott has released a statement saying both of those assurances have been denied by the federal government.
“As governor, I will continue to prioritize the safety of all Texans and urge the federal government to overhaul this severely broken system,” the governor writes.
Texas has accepted more refugees than any other state. The state must provide four months notice to withdraw, so Texas will officially leave the program at the end of January 2017.
