Grand Prairie (WBAP/KLIF News) – IKEA has broken ground on its second store in the Metroplex. The store along Bush Turnpike, north of I-20, in Grand Prairie is scheduled to open in Fall of 2017.

“We think this is a great location with good visibility right off the George Bush Turnpike,” says IKEA’s Joseph Roth.

IKEA’s first store in North Texas opened in Frisco in 2005.

“The Metroplex is so expansive, it’s fast growing and it’s been more than 11 years since we opened IKEA Frisco,” Roth says.

The area along Bush Turnpike has grown since the highway opened in 2012. Grand Prairie police opened moved into a station a Highway 161 and Marshall; a senior center has opened two blocks south.

IKEA will cover 290,000 square feet on 30 acres of land at Bush Turnpike and Mayfield.

“This is going to allow us to attract the retail and the restaurants we’ve been missing,” says Mayor Ron Jensen.

Jensen says IKEA will lead to more development on 300 acres around the store. He says Grand Prairie has 1,600 acres of land that can be developed within one mile.

“It’s going to be a regional draw,” he says. “This land had no access for years, but once we opened it, we knew development would come. We couldn’t dream that it’d be a super mega-box IKEA, but we’ll take it.”
