AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says he does expect the U.S. to build new physical barriers along the border with Mexico once Donald Trump takes office.
But Abbott also said Tuesday that “we don’t want to see a wall” through the Big Bend region. Texas shares more than 1,200 miles with Mexico and spends more than $800 million on border security.
Abbott says Texas could cut back on those costs under a Trump administration.
He says he also wants to see if Trump rolls back an Obama administrative order that required public schools to let transgender students use bathrooms consistent with their chosen gender identity.
Business groups are opposed to Texas passing its own bathroom regulations. Abbott told reporters in Austin he’s still evaluating whether the state needs its own law.
