DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – The man who has been known as the “Corny Dog King” at the State Fair of Texas has died.

Skip Fletcher of Fletcher’s Corny Dogs died at the age of 82 after a battle with pneumonia. In a Facebook post Tuesday afternoon, Fletcher’s Corny Dogs wrote they unexpectedly lost their patriarch.

“He was one of those smiling faces,” said Karissa Condoianis of the State Fair. “Everytime you saw him, he was happy and he just loved people. He loved the fair-goers. He loved sitting in his stool in his booth up at Big Tex and smiling and waving at all the fair-goers. He was a celebrity in his own right.”

Condoianis said when thinking about the State Fair, the Fletcher’s Corny dog is almost as symbolic, if not equal, to Big Tex.

“It’s definitely become an iconic piece of the State Fair of Texas’ overall history,” Condoianis said. “It’s something people automatically think of when they think of the State Fair.”

She says the business will remain with the family, so fair-goers can expect to see the famous corny dogs back at the fair for their 75th year. They were first sold at the State Fair of Texas in 1942.

The company asked for thoughts and prayers as they “go about the tasks ahead of adjusting to being without the presence of such an amazing man.”
