ARLINGTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – An Arlington police officer is in serious condition and a suspect is dead after a traffic stop spiraled out of control Wednesday night.
It happened around 11:30 p.m. on Spring Lake Drive just south of I-30 near Fielder Road.
Lieutenant Chris Cook said an officer called for backup after discovering that the suspect had several felony warrants out of Dallas County and Grand Prairie.
He said when backup officers arrived, the driver put his car into reverse and ran over a female officer then hit her patrol car. He then ran over her again as he was attempting to drive away.
“For this person to make the decision that…I am not going to go to jail and get away at all costs by running over an officer. Obviously, he’s an extreme danger to the community,” he said.
A backup officer managed to get into the car from the rear door and shoot the suspect before he could do anymore harm. Cook said the suspect had no regard for the two adults and toddler who were also in the car.
“As far as the relationship between the suspect and child I am not sure. If you’re willing to run over and officer twice, he probably didn’t give too much thought about the toddler being in the vehicle,” he said.
Cook said the injured officer was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital and has several broken bones but is expected to survive. Police are reviewing dash-cam video and interviewing officers and others involved in the incident.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the suspect once his family has been notified.
